Desperate Choices: Afghan Families Forced to Sell Daughters

Post by : Shakul

The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is escalating, compelling families to make gut-wrenching choices as widespread poverty, hunger, and unemployment take a toll.

In the province of Ghor, men gather daily in hopes of securing jobs, yet many leave without any earnings after long hours of waiting.

Reports from fathers reveal the unbearable struggles of providing for their children, as rampant food shortages and rising unemployment plunge them deeper into despair. Many said their kids have gone several days without sufficient food.

One father, Abdul Rashid Azimi, shared his painful contemplation of selling one of his daughters for marriage or domestic service, as he feels unable to feed his family. He labeled the choice excruciating yet necessary.

Another father, Saeed Ahmad, disclosed his heart-wrenching agreement to part with his five-year-old daughter for financial assistance needed for her urgent medical surgery. With no financial resources, his family is in dire need.

The humanitarian landscape has grown dire following significant cuts in international aid over the past two years, coupled with extreme drought conditions that aggravate food insecurity, pushing millions toward famine.

Health professionals in local hospitals report alarming increases in child malnutrition and infant mortality rates. Overcrowded facilities, medicine shortages, and a rising number of severely underweight infants are becoming the norm.

Aid organizations persist in sounding alarms, indicating that millions of Afghans face dire situations without immediate humanitarian support as the economic crisis unfolds.
