The joint forces from Morocco and the United States are actively engaging in a comprehensive search effort for two American soldiers who have gone missing amid military exercises off the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The operation, which has mobilized over 600 military personnel from various nations, is focusing on coastal waters, underwater caves, and rocky shorelines near Tan-Tan, in the southwestern region of Morocco.
As reported by military officials, the two US Army soldiers were last seen near the Cap Draa training area during the multinational African Lion 2026 military exercise. Authorities suspect that the soldiers may have taken a recreational hike before potentially encountering dangerous coastal conditions leading to their disappearance into the ocean.
This search initiative has entered its fifth day, covering an area exceeding 45 square kilometers of ocean and coastline. Officials emphasize that ensuring the safety of the missing soldiers and all personnel involved is their highest priority, as rescue teams work tirelessly around the clock.
The African Lion exercise ranks as one of the most extensive military drills in Africa, orchestrated by the United States, collaborating closely with African and international partners. This year’s iteration involves over 7,000 personnel from more than 30 nations, taking place across Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal.
Visuals released by the Moroccan Navy showcased military divers examining underwater caves, while helicopters and surveillance aircraft meticulously scanned the coast and ocean surface. Search operations also included canine units and emergency personnel tirelessly searching rocky beaches and challenging coastal regions.
Several military vessels have been recalled from the exercise to bolster the search efforts, including a Moroccan multi-mission frigate and a supporting French vessel. Additionally, American military logistics ships are playing a critical role in coordinating rescue and surveillance operations in the affected areas.
Air support has become essential to this ongoing mission, with aircraft such as American UC-35 Citation jets, US Army C-12 Huron surveillance planes, and Moroccan Puma and Super Puma helicopters actively participating in the search. Authorities confirmed the incorporation of unmanned aerial systems and drones to enhance monitoring capabilities of challenging search zones.
The identities of the missing soldiers have yet to be disclosed by military officials. However, both Moroccan and American authorities are ensuring ongoing communication with the families of the soldiers as rescue efforts proceed under demanding conditions along the Atlantic coastline.
This incident has attracted global attention as the African Lion 2026 exercise nears its conclusion later this week. Analysts emphasize that this operation underscores the robust military collaboration between Morocco, the United States, and its allies, particularly in the realms of multilateral exercises and emergency response coordination.
