Early Morning 4.6 Quake Rocks Northern California

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Early Thursday morning, a 4.6 magnitude earthquake jolted residents of Northern California, impacting a vast area that included San Francisco. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) indicated that the earthquake hit around 1:40 a.m., with its epicenter situated just a mile (1.6 kilometers) from Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Residents reported the sensation of their homes shaking for several moments, with tremors felt across a 100-mile (161-kilometer) radius. Boulder Creek, a small town of about 5,000, sits approximately 65 miles (105 kilometers) southeast of San Francisco and was nearest to the epicenter. Disturbances were also noted as far north as Petaluma, which is roughly 40 miles (64 kilometers) from the city.

Many individuals indicated that they received alerts on their phones prior to experiencing shaking in their beds and windows.

Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

This seismic event follows previous tremors in the area. In February, multiple small earthquakes shook the San Francisco Bay Area, with the strongest measuring 4.2 near San Ramon. Experts note that the region east of San Francisco has a history of “earthquake swarms,” which are clusters of small quakes occurring in a short timeframe.

Seismologists are actively watching the area for potential aftershocks and encourage residents to remain ready for minor tremors.
