Wildfire in Northern Greece: Day Two of Firefighting Operations

Enhanced Fire Response with Aerial Support

A significant forest fire in the Florina region of northern Greece has entered its second day, with local authorities ramping up firefighting efforts and issuing evacuations for residents in threatened areas.

Fire Originates Near Krystallopigi

The blaze was first reported on Wednesday afternoon in a secluded area close to Krystallopigi, posing additional challenges for firefighting teams.

Authorities responded by bolstering on-ground crews as flames persisted into Thursday. Firefighters along with ground teams are actively engaged in tackling the fire and preventing further spread.

Mandatory Evacuation Initiated

Due to the escalating situation, an evacuation order was issued early Thursday morning to safeguard residents in areas deemed vulnerable to the wildfire.

Evacuations are crucial to the emergency response as firefighting operations continue in earnest.

Aerial Resources Deployed to Assist

Greek authorities have enhanced the firefighting efforts by dispatching dozens of firefighters, additional ground crews, two aircraft, and two helicopters.

These aerial resources are working alongside ground teams to contain the forest blaze amid challenging terrain in northern Greece.

Ongoing Emergency Measures

The fire remains active as emergency services stay focused on containment and the protection of nearby communities. Firefighting teams are diligently conducting operations while continuously evaluating the situation.

The difficult geography near Krystallopigi necessitates coordination between ground crews and aerial units in their response.

Wildfire Threat in Northern Greece

Wildfires pose significant threats to forests, communities, and local infrastructure, especially in conducive conditions for rapid fire spread. The incident in Florina has sparked a significant emergency response.

Residents affected by the evacuation order are advised to heed instructions from local officials as firefighting efforts progress.
