Xinjiang, China — November 6, 2025: A 4.7-magnitude earthquake rattled parts of Xinjiang today. Seismic agencies say the tremor originated about 220 kilometres below the surface; there are no reports of injuries or structural damage.
The quake comes after a 4.9-magnitude event on October 26 that struck at roughly 130 km depth. In recent months, Xinjiang and other Chinese regions have seen multiple moderate quakes, underscoring persistent seismic activity in the area.
China’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS) continues to track the events. Previous recent shocks included a 4.2-magnitude tremor on September 8 at 50 km depth and a 4.1 on September 7 at about 10 km depth; specialists warn that shallower quakes can produce stronger surface shaking and greater risk.
China sits at the convergence of major seismic belts — notably the circum-Pacific and circum-Indian zones — and the interactions of the Pacific, Indian and Philippine plates have carved extensive fault systems. Since the early 20th century, the country has recorded over 800 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher, impacting almost every province and autonomous region.
Earthquakes have exacted a heavy toll in China. Records show that since 1900 more than 550,000 people have died in quake-related events — a significant share of worldwide fatalities. From 1949 onward, over 100 major destructive quakes have killed some 270,000 people and razed millions of homes.
Although the latest 4.7 tremor caused no known injuries or damage, authorities stress the importance of preparedness and continued monitoring. Ongoing vigilance is vital to reduce risks to lives and property as China confronts recurrent natural hazards.
