6.3-Magnitude Quake Shakes East Nusa Tenggara; No Tsunami Alert

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake rattled Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province in the early hours of Monday, but officials say there are no reports of casualties or visible damage. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the tremor occurred at 00:04 a.m. Jakarta time, with an epicentre located about 82 km northwest of North Central Timor Regency at a depth of 75 km.

Residents reported feeling the shock, which was brief but noticeable. Authorities confirmed that the quake did not generate a tsunami risk. “People here felt the shaking, but there was no panic. So far, no damage or injuries have been reported. We remain vigilant and continue to assess the situation,” said Gasper Losa Manisa, head of the East Nusa Tenggara Disaster Management Agency.

The BMKG provided the epicentre coordinates as 9.06 degrees south latitude and 123.97 degrees east longitude. Seismologists cautioned that aftershocks could follow, though they saw no signs of an imminent, larger seismic event.

Disaster response teams are on standby to inspect structures and look for any delayed damage or injuries. The incident highlights Indonesia’s exposure to frequent seismic activity due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Officials urged residents to stay calm, keep emergency supplies accessible, and heed guidance from local authorities as monitoring continues. The quake underscores the continued need for preparedness and reliable early-warning systems in earthquake-prone areas.
