A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit Papua province in Indonesia on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake struck at a depth of 70 kilometers (43.5 miles), categorizing it as moderately deep.
Its epicenter was located around 200 kilometers from Abepura, which has a population exceeding 62,000. Initial assessments show no casualties or significant damages reported, but emergency teams remain on alert.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) confirmed that no tsunami alert has been issued following the earthquake. Authorities are closely monitoring the area, as Papua is situated along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” known for its seismic activity and volcanism.
People in Abepura felt the tremors for several seconds. Local authorities are advising residents to stay vigilant and adhere to emergency measures. It is recommended that individuals check building stability and maintain emergency supplies.
Indonesia regularly experiences earthquakes, and the government has disaster response teams ready in vulnerable areas. While there is no immediate tsunami threat from this quake, officials urge communities to remain alert over the next few hours and days.
The USGS will provide ongoing updates concerning aftershocks and potential repercussions in the area. Residents and visitors should stay updated through official sources and heed instructions from local authorities.
