The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has formalized a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tokyo National Museum, aimed at fostering cultural cooperation and the exchange of knowledge between Abu Dhabi and Japan.
The signing event took place at the headquarters of DCT Abu Dhabi, with Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, present. The MoU was formally signed by Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, the Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, alongside Makoto Fujiwara, Executive Director of Tokyo National Museum.
This partnership lays a foundation for extensive collaboration in museum research, educational initiatives, and professional development. It aims to enhance cross-cultural exchanges, improve curatorial practices, and create avenues for joint exhibitions and public programs that foster a deeper appreciation of both Emirati and Japanese cultures.
On this occasion, Al Mubarak stated that the agreement embodies Abu Dhabi’s commitment to forging meaningful international cultural partnerships. He emphasized that collaboration with Tokyo National Museum will support mutual learning, growth of institutions, and long-lasting relationships between the two nations, emphasizing the role of culture in connecting societies and inspiring future generations.
Fujiwara expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting its potential to enhance the global museum landscape through shared knowledge and creative dialogue. He remarked that this partnership would facilitate joint exhibitions and heritage projects, introducing audiences in both nations to the richness of their respective cultural heritages.
The MoU also encompasses collaboration in the study, preservation, and conservation of cultural materials, including reciprocal lending of artefacts. Additionally, it serves as a framework for training and exchange programs aimed at the development of museum professionals and promoting ongoing collaboration.
Furthermore, the partnership will lead to joint exhibitions, educational courses, and cultural workshops within Abu Dhabi, fostering public engagement and dialogue through cultural learning.
This agreement is a significant step in DCT Abu Dhabi’s broader vision of enhancing international cultural ties and establishing the emirate as a leading hub for museum collaboration, research, and best practices. The MoU signifies a new beginning in cultural relations between Abu Dhabi and Japan, founded on shared values of creativity, education, and mutual understanding.
