Abu Dhabi has announced a major coral restoration effort to establish 500,000 coral colonies surrounding the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the Al Dhafra Region. The initiative is one component of a wider objective to develop four million coral colonies across the emirate by 2030.
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) will lead the programme, pooling scientific capacity and resources to rebuild local reefs. Planned coral nurseries will prioritise species that show resilience to rising sea temperatures to improve reef durability under climate stress.
Over a three-year rollout, the project aims to cultivate half a million colonies while deploying comprehensive environmental monitoring to track outcomes. The work is intended to bolster marine biodiversity and create improved habitats for fish and other coastal species.
EAD brings significant restoration experience: since 2021 it has propagated more than 1.45 million coral colonies as part of the Gulf’s largest reef rehabilitation effort. The programme has used advanced nursery techniques and adaptive cultivation practices, achieving about a 95% post-summer survival rate for corals and a roughly 50% rise in fish biomass in restored areas.
The partnership illustrates a coordinated model between government conservation bodies and the energy sector, integrating environmental safeguards into industrial projects to pursue sustainable outcomes.
By expanding reef rehabilitation, Abu Dhabi aims to preserve its marine environments, support scientific study and enhance the resilience of coastal ecosystems to future environmental pressures.
