Abu Dhabi Leaders Forge Urban Partnerships During China Tour

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A high-profile delegation from Abu Dhabi, led by Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), wrapped up a significant visit to Shanghai and Hangzhou this week. The aim was to foster urban development collaboration and to glean insights into advanced city planning methodologies.

Accompanied by notable officials like Hamad Hareb AlMuhairi from the Abu Dhabi Housing Authority and Eng Maysarah Mahmoud Eid from the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Center, the team engaged in discussions with high-ranking government, academic, and industry representatives to explore innovative solutions for urban challenges.

In Shanghai, they met with Vice Mayor Zhang Xiaohong to discuss prospects for long-term municipal collaboration and knowledge sharing in urban innovation. A technical workshop with Tongji Architectural Design Group and Tongji University provided a platform to delve into integrated transport, landscape, and infrastructure strategies. Tours of iconic areas such as The Bund enriched their understanding of heritage conservation and revitalization measures.

The delegation explored prefabricated housing concepts with Q-Home, examined artificial intelligence applications for energy management at the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Center, and observed the cutting-edge 3D printing technology for public infrastructure at Zevo Technology, known for using over 60% recycled materials. They also learned about the Sponge City Rainwater Purification and Reuse Program at the Shanghai World Expo China Pavilion, an impressive model of sustainable urban water management.

In Hangzhou, the group participated in a design session with 100architects to discuss placemaking, street activations, and youth-focused public spaces. Visiting the City Planning Exhibition Hall allowed them to see AI-driven simulations of urban environments, which showcased how heritage and modern smart districts can coexist effectively while optimizing land use and infrastructure planning.

This visit not only showcased how Chinese cities blend tradition with progressive approaches but also delivered valuable insights for Abu Dhabi’s ongoing urban growth strategies.
