A humanitarian aid convoy has started its journey towards Oleshky, a Russian-controlled town in southern Ukraine, carrying food, medical supplies and other essential items for residents facing severe shortages. The relief operation follows weeks of preparations to deliver assistance to people living in difficult conditions amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
The convoy began moving overnight, according to Russian media reports. The operation is also expected to provide an opportunity for some residents to leave the town, where access to essential supplies has remained a major concern.
The aid convoy is carrying essential supplies intended to support civilians affected by the conflict. Russian human rights commissioner Lana Lantratova was featured in videos released by the Russian newspaper Izvestia, which also showed passenger buses prepared for the operation.
Journalists from several countries, including France, Italy, Russia, Ukraine and the United States, are expected to accompany the convoy to observe the humanitarian mission.
The operation aims to provide relief to residents who have faced difficult living conditions during the prolonged conflict. Food and medical supplies are among the key items being delivered.
Russia and Ukraine had earlier announced that demining operations around Oleshky had been completed, clearing the way for the planned humanitarian operation.
The removal of landmines and other explosive devices was an important step towards allowing aid vehicles to reach the town. The operation is also intended to help some civilians leave the area safely.
Oleshky has remained under Russian control since the early stages of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The town's position in the southern Kherson region has made humanitarian access and civilian safety important concerns during the conflict.
While preparations for the humanitarian mission continued, Russian attacks were also reported in other parts of Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials said Russian forces struck an industrial facility near Kremenchuk and carried out attacks on Kyiv and Kharkiv. The strikes reportedly caused fires at several locations.
These attacks followed deadly Russian strikes reported in Ukraine the previous day, including an attack on a railway station in Dnipro that killed civilians.
The aid operation highlights the challenges faced by civilians living in conflict-affected areas of Ukraine. Access to food, healthcare and safe transportation remains a major concern for communities caught in the fighting.
The convoy's arrival could provide essential assistance to residents of Oleshky and create an opportunity for civilians seeking to leave the town. Its progress will also be closely watched as humanitarian access remains a sensitive issue in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
