German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has urged China to ensure that its pursuit of economic self-sufficiency does not create excessive dependence on Chinese goods and supplies in other countries. His remarks highlight growing European concerns about trade imbalances, market access and competition with Chinese industries.
Speaking at Peking University in Beijing, Steinmeier said China’s efforts to protect its economy from external shocks were understandable. However, he stressed that greater economic independence for China should not make other countries more vulnerable or dependent on Beijing.
The German president’s comments come as the European Union seeks to address its widening trade deficit with China and calls for more balanced economic relations between the two sides.
European officials have expressed concern about the growing gap between imports from China and exports to the Chinese market. The EU has described the widening trade deficit as unsustainable and warned that it could use available measures to address the issue.
Steinmeier said European companies face difficulties accessing the Chinese market, while European markets receive large volumes of Chinese imports supported by state subsidies. He also raised concerns about China’s restrictions on exports of certain raw materials, which European industries depend on for manufacturing and production.
These issues have increased pressure on European policymakers to seek fairer trading conditions and protect the region’s industrial capacity.
Germany and France have proposed a new European Union mechanism designed to respond more quickly when other countries take actions that harm European economic interests. China is likely to be a key focus of discussions surrounding the proposal.
The initiative reflects broader European efforts to strengthen trade policy tools while addressing concerns about competition, subsidies and access to foreign markets.
Steinmeier said Europe remained determined to preserve its industrial base. He also expressed confidence that European and Chinese officials could find solutions through dialogue.
Steinmeier is visiting China for a five-day trip and is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trade relations, industrial cooperation and broader economic issues are important subjects as Berlin and Beijing seek to manage their differences.
Germany has strong economic links with China, making stable trade relations important for businesses in both countries. At the same time, European leaders are seeking conditions that allow their companies to compete more fairly in the Chinese market.
Steinmeier warned that a new confrontation between competing international blocs would create risks for global security and economic growth. He said dialogue remained preferable to a prolonged conflict between major economic powers.
His remarks reflect the challenge facing Europe as it attempts to reduce economic vulnerabilities without damaging international trade relationships.
The discussions between Germany, China and the wider European Union could influence future policies on market access, industrial subsidies, supply chains and raw material exports. Finding common ground will be important for maintaining economic cooperation while addressing concerns over trade fairness and dependence.
