In a significant environmental breakthrough, the Ajman Department of Municipal Affairs and Planning has marked considerable strides in 2026, enhancing sustainability and improving environmental standards across the emirate.
The Department reported notable progress in air quality and waste management for the first quarter, aligning with its long-term environmental objectives. These include curbing pollution, progressing towards carbon neutrality, preserving biodiversity, conserving natural resources, and refining integrated waste systems as part of the Ajman 2030 vision.
Dr. Eng. Khalid Maeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector, emphasized that enhanced efforts and coordination have upgraded monitoring systems and environmental inspections. He noted improved management of oil and grease waste, alongside initiatives to heighten compliance among local businesses.
Official statistics indicate that Ajman experienced 97.60% of days with excellent air quality in Q1 2026, showcasing effective measures implemented for pollution reduction, particularly in urban settings. Meanwhile, the compliance measure for properly treated waste climbed to 25%, signifying improved waste management practices and adherence to environmental regulations.
The collection of oil and grease waste surged dramatically compared to 2025. January recorded 232,411 gallons, a jump from 101,642 gallons last year. February reported 210,872 gallons against 80,761 gallons, while March showcased 85,270 gallons compared to 34,866 gallons. These increases, between 129% and 161%, were influenced by a new electronic system, improved data accuracy, expanded coverage, and enhanced inspection protocols.
As part of its environmental programs, the Department initiated the “Carbon-Zero Schools” initiative, with 60 schools participating in Q1, encompassing 20 governmental and 40 private institutions. Awareness workshops aimed at students have been conducted, with a dedicated committee established to oversee implementation.
Inspection measures were bolstered, with 500 inspections completed since the year's commencement. These inspections specifically focused on facilities handling chemicals, oils, and other high-impact operations particularly in environmentally sensitive zones, to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
The Department is also progressing critical projects, such as a waste sorting line at the transfer station, boasting a capacity exceeding 500 tonnes daily. This initiative aims to enhance recycling efforts and minimize landfill waste. Other undertakings target sewage sludge treatment, hazardous waste management, and waste-to-energy studies, promoting a circular economy approach.
Officials assert that these accomplishments signify ongoing advancements in Ajman’s environmental framework through effective policies and targeted initiatives. The Department remains dedicated to fostering collaborations with both public and private sectors to cultivate a cleaner and more sustainable future.
