A panel appointed by the Alberta government has published a comprehensive report recommending a series of referendums on crucial matters, notably the replacement of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) with a provincial alternative and the establishment of an Alberta police service to succeed the RCMP.
The Alberta Next panel, tasked with assessing the province's status in relation to the federal government, identifies the pension issue as the primary concern. The panel argues that Albertans should have the option to achieve financial self-reliance through a local pension plan that matches or surpasses the benefits and rates of the existing federal offering. It's emphasized that votes on this topic should follow extensive public education regarding potential advantages and challenges.
Additionally, the panel supports ongoing plans to create an Alberta police force as the contract with the RCMP comes to an end in 2032. There are growing worries about police staffing issues, especially in rural areas where some are financially contributing for RCMP presence without adequate service.
This report also advocates for public votes on enhancing provincial authority over immigration and constitutional changes, such as the elimination of the appointed Senate. A cost-benefit analysis is recommended to investigate Alberta managing its own taxation without reliance on federal frameworks.
On economic fronts, the panel advises the provincial government to seek reforms in the federal equalization program. While many residents understand the need to support smaller provinces, a considerable number are against their federal tax contributions aiding provinces with robust economies that can maintain public services independently.
This recommendation follows extensive town halls and resident surveys aimed at understanding public sentiment. It reflects a mounting aspiration in Alberta for increased autonomy within the Canadian federation and stronger governance over essential aspects that impact the province's future.
