A 3.0 magnitude earthquake has struck near San Ramon in Contra Costa County, California, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor was detected on Friday evening, December 19, 2025, at 7:57 PM local time.
The seismic activity occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 2.9 miles, increasing the likelihood of local residents feeling the effects. Experts caution that the details regarding the magnitude, location, and depth may still be revised as further analysis from scientific teams continues to emerge.
Additionally, two prominent seismic monitoring institutions confirmed the occurrence, with the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) listing it as magnitude 3.0, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) noted it slightly higher at 3.1.
Initial evaluations indicate that the quake caused no significant damage. Many nearby residents may have felt mild shaking or short tremors, particularly due to the shallow depth.
Areas including San Ramon and Dublin, approximately 3 miles from the epicenter, likely experienced weak shaking. Other regions that may have felt very slight vibrations include Danville, Pleasanton, Castro Valley, Hayward, and Livermore, all situated within 11 miles of the quake's center.
Residents in larger cities such as San Francisco and San Jose are not expected to have felt the tremor.
Authorities have reported no injuries or damage related to this earthquake, although residents are advised to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks.
