West Indies have suffered a huge setback just days before their Test series against India begins. Their main fast bowler, Alzarri Joseph, has been ruled out of the entire two-match series due to a lower back injury. The first Test is set to begin on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With only three days left before the game, this news has come as a major blow to the visitors.
How the Injury Happened
Joseph complained of back discomfort while training with the team. Medical scans later showed that the bowler’s lower back injury, which had been treated earlier, had flared up again. The medical team advised him to rest and recover rather than risk making the injury worse by playing in India.
Joseph’s Recent Form
Alzarri Joseph has been one of the leading bowlers for the West Indies in Test cricket. He performed strongly in the recent Test series against Australia at home, where his pace and accuracy troubled many top batters. His absence means West Indies will miss his wicket-taking ability and experience in Indian conditions, where they already face a tough challenge.
Replacement Named in Squad
To fill the gap, West Indies have named Jediah Blades as Joseph’s replacement in the Test squad. Blades is currently in Sharjah, where he is playing in a three-match T20I series against Nepal. Once that series ends, he will travel to Ahmedabad to join the Test team. While Blades has shown potential, he does not yet have the same experience as Joseph in the longest format of the game.
Jason Holder Declines Selection
Former captain and all-rounder Jason Holder was also approached by selectors to join the Test squad as Joseph’s replacement. However, Holder declined selection because he has a planned medical procedure during this time. His absence further reduces West Indies’ pool of experienced players for the series.
More Fast Bowling Problems
Joseph’s injury is not the only setback for West Indies fast bowling. Just a few days ago, Shamar Joseph was also ruled out of the Test series due to an undisclosed injury. To cover that loss, Johann Layne was added to the squad. With both Alzarri and Shamar missing, West Indies are left with fewer strike bowling options, making their task against India much more difficult.
West Indies’ Test Struggles Continue
West Indies have already lost three matches in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Their performances have not been strong, and now, losing two of their best fast bowlers has made their chances even slimmer. Facing India in India is always a tough challenge, but going in without their key bowlers makes the task even more demanding.
India Series Becomes Harder
The upcoming two-match Test series is crucial for both sides. For India, it is another chance to secure valuable WTC points at home. For West Indies, it was an opportunity to bounce back after a series of poor results. However, with their bowling strength reduced, the Caribbean side will have to depend on young and less experienced players to deliver against a strong Indian batting lineup.
Official Confirmation from Windies Cricket
Windies Cricket officially announced Joseph’s injury on their social media handle X (formerly Twitter). The board also informed fans about Blades joining the squad and confirmed that Jason Holder had declined the opportunity to play. The update disappointed many supporters, who were hopeful of seeing Joseph in action against India.
West Indies Test Squad for India Tour
The full West Indies Test squad for the India series is: Roston Chase (captain), Jomel Warrican (vice-captain), Kevlon Anderson, Alick Athanaze, John Campbell, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, Tevin Imlach, Jediah Blades, Johann Layne, Brandon King, Anderson Phillip, Khary Pierre, and Jayden Seales. This squad has several young names, and the responsibility will now fall on them to step up in the absence of senior players.
Alzarri Joseph’s injury is a major blow for West Indies just before their Test series against India. With both Alzarri and Shamar Joseph missing, their bowling attack has been badly weakened. The team will now rely on fresh faces like Jediah Blades and Johann Layne to support experienced players such as Jayden Seales. For India, the absence of West Indies’ best fast bowlers could make the series easier, but for the Caribbean side, it will be a true test of character and depth.
