Devastating Floods in Angola: 18 Lives Lost and Thousands Displaced

Post by : Shakul

In an unfortunate turn of events, Benguela, Angola has witnessed catastrophic flooding that has claimed at least 18 lives, with 11 individuals still missing, as reported by local officials on April 15, 2026.

The flooding stems from a substantial rise in the Cavaco River due to torrential rainfall. The crisis escalated when a protective barrier on the river’s left bank gave way last Sunday, leading to abrupt flooding in numerous neighborhoods.

These unprecedented floods have inundated residential areas, resulting in extensive damage and widespread fear among inhabitants. Authorities have confirmed the destruction of at least 451 homes, leaving a community of thousands in need of shelter and basic essentials.

Close to 20,000 residents have been forced to leave their homes and urgently require humanitarian aid, including food, safe drinking water, and medical assistance.

In response to the crisis, President Joao Lourenco has visited the impacted area to oversee emergency operations concerning the Cavaco River dam. During his visit, he chaired a meeting with the National Civil Protection Committee in Benguela to evaluate conditions and organize relief efforts for affected families.

Historical records show that the Cavaco River has faced repeated flooding, notably in 1979, 1983, 2002, and 2015, each causing significant devastation to property, agriculture, and lives.

The Southern African region is grappling with uncommonly intense rainfall seasons. Nearby countries such as Namibia and Zambia have also encountered severe flooding in recent years, illustrating an escalating climate risk in the area.

In 2023, Angola experienced serious flooding, resulting in 30 fatalities and affecting over 116,000 people across 15 of its 18 provinces, highlighting the persistent nature of such calamities in the nation.
