Anthropic Introduces Opus 5 AI Model at Half the Fable 5 Price

Anthropic Introduces Opus 5 AI Model at Half the Fable 5 Price

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Anthropic has launched its latest AI offering, Opus 5, claiming it matches the capabilities of the more advanced Fable 5 model while being priced at just 50% of the cost.

This San Francisco-based AI firm noted that Opus 5 is tailored for everyday tasks, focusing on office productivity and programming. The company emphasizes its commitment to making high-performance AI technology more accessible for general users.

In a discussion Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s product head, highlighted the company's rapid innovation cycle. She indicated that Opus 5 is an improvement over the previously launched Opus 4.8, introduced in May, affirming Anthropic’s direction towards enhancing AI technology.

“Our goal is to keep advancing frontier intelligence and ensuring accessibility with each successive model,” Penn stated in her conversation with Reuters.

Anthropic has revealed that internal evaluations show Opus 5 possesses fewer cyber vulnerability exploits compared to Fable 5, leading to more lenient safety protocols being applied to Opus 5. The new model exhibits increased resilience against user manipulation aimed at misuse relative to the company’s other AI products.

Fable 5, which debuted in June, was temporarily withdrawn from service amid concerns in the US about its advanced functionalities potentially being used for foreign military purposes.

Penn encouraged users to select Opus 5 for cost-effective AI solutions suited for daily operations, while Fable 5 remains optimal for more challenging tasks requiring prolonged autonomous functioning.

She further discussed Kimi K3, an open-weight AI model from China’s Moonshot, accusing it of capitalizing on Anthropic’s developments without sufficient credit. The performance of such open-weight models in complex, real-world scenarios is still uncertain, according to Penn.

On a different note, open-weight models differ from proprietary systems by allowing users to download and customize the AI for personal use, providing enhanced operational flexibility.

With the launch of Opus 5, Anthropic aims to widen access to sophisticated AI tools while providing a more budget-friendly choice for professional and coding tasks.
