London, June 10 — An armed attack targeting a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Aden was successfully repelled by the ship's security personnel on Wednesday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The incident occurred off the coast of Yemen, highlighting the continuing security challenges facing one of the world's busiest maritime corridors. No injuries or damage were reported, and authorities have launched an investigation into the attack.
According to UKMTO, the vessel reported that a small boat carrying six armed men approached the ship approximately 88 nautical miles southwest of Balhaf, Yemen.
UKMTO said the armed men attempted to approach the vessel, prompting an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and the ship's onboard security team. The assailants later withdrew from the area without boarding the vessel.
British military authorities separately confirmed that shots were exchanged between the security guards aboard the commercial ship and the armed individuals in the small craft.
Officials said the vessel continued its journey after the incident, with no casualties among the crew and no reported damage to the ship.
Following the attack, UKMTO renewed its advisory for vessels operating in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden, urging ship operators to maintain heightened vigilance and promptly report any suspicious activity that could endanger maritime safety.
The agency has repeatedly emphasized the importance of security measures in the region, where commercial shipping continues to face risks from armed attacks and other disruptions.
Maritime authorities closely monitor incidents in the area because of their potential impact on international trade and energy transportation.
The Bab al-Mandab Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, making it one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints. A significant portion of global trade and energy shipments passes through the narrow passage each year.
Since late 2023, security concerns in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have led to repeated attacks on commercial and military vessels. The disruptions have forced some shipping companies to alter routes, increase transit times and strengthen onboard security arrangements.
The situation has also raised concerns among governments and international shipping organizations about the safety of maritime traffic and the potential effects on global supply chains.
Wednesday's incident underscores the ongoing risks facing commercial vessels traveling through waters near Yemen. Although the attack was repelled without casualties, authorities continue to monitor the region closely amid concerns about future threats.
Shipping companies and international maritime agencies are expected to maintain enhanced security protocols as efforts continue to safeguard one of the world's most strategically important trade routes.
