Asia Cup 2025 Trophy Locked Amid India-Pakistan Dispute

Asia Cup 2025 Trophy Locked Amid India-Pakistan Dispute

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

The Asia Cup 2025 became one of the most controversial editions in the tournament’s history, overshadowed by political tension and heated exchanges between India and Pakistan. What began as a sporting event meant to unite Asia’s cricketing nations turned into a dramatic series of disputes both on and off the field.

India Refuses To Shake Hands With Pakistan

The controversy began during the group stage when the Indian cricket team refused to shake hands with Pakistan players after their match. The gesture drew global attention and stirred debates across social media and sports forums. The decision reportedly reflected India’s firm political and emotional stance following the Pahalgam terror attack, which had deeply strained bilateral relations.

Trophy Controversy After The Final

The situation escalated during the final match, held on September 28 in Dubai, where India faced Pakistan once again. India emerged as the winner, but the victory celebration took an unexpected turn. The Indian team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister.

Trophy Locked At ACC Headquarters

Following this standoff, Naqvi reportedly walked away with the trophy from the presentation ceremony. The trophy is now being kept at the ACC headquarters in Dubai, under orders that it cannot be moved or handed over without Naqvi’s personal approval. According to sources, he has instructed that the trophy will only be given to the Indian team or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) when he can hand it over in person.

BCCI To Raise The Issue At ICC Meeting

The BCCI reacted strongly to the incident, describing Naqvi’s behavior as unacceptable. The Indian board plans to raise the matter at the upcoming ICC meeting. Sources close to the BCCI said the board may propose disciplinary action against Naqvi, including a possible censure or removal from his ICC Director position. The BCCI maintains that the trophy should have been handed over to the winning team directly or through official channels, not withheld over political differences.

Statements From Both Sides

The BCCI is clear that Naqvi had no right to insist on personally handing over the trophy or refusing to send it to India. As the official host of the event, the BCCI should have received it.”
Meanwhile, sources close to Naqvi claim he believes his actions were justified and that he intends to hand over the trophy personally when “the situation allows.” This ongoing standoff has left the trophy effectively locked away and unclaimed weeks after the tournament’s conclusion.

Political Tensions Influence The Tournament

Throughout the Asia Cup, India and Pakistan’s strained relations deeply affected the tournament’s atmosphere. Reports suggest that players from both sides avoided contact, and no handshakes took place at any stage of the event. There were also social media posts and symbolic gestures from both teams that reflected ongoing political tension rather than sporting camaraderie.

Mohsin Naqvi’s Dual Role Draws Criticism

Naqvi’s position as both PCB Chairman and Pakistan’s Interior Minister has drawn criticism from several cricket boards and fans, who believe such dual roles make it difficult to separate sports from politics. Many observers say his involvement in the controversy has further strained relations between the two cricketing nations and harmed the spirit of the tournament.

Asia Cup Overshadowed By Political Hostilities

The Asia Cup 2025 was meant to celebrate Asian cricketing talent and unity, but instead, it became a symbol of division. The handshake controversy, trophy dispute, and political statements have all overshadowed the sporting achievements of the players. With tensions at their peak, cricket officials from both countries are now under pressure to find a diplomatic solution before the next international series.

As the trophy remains locked in Dubai, questions linger over the future of India-Pakistan cricket ties. While fans around the world await a resolution, the incident serves as a reminder of how politics can still overshadow sports. Whether the Asia Cup trophy will finally reach India—and when—remains an open question, reflecting the continuing complexities between the two nations both on and off the field.
