Pat Cummins Doubtful for First Ashes Test Due to Injury

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Australia’s captain Pat Cummins is facing uncertainty ahead of the first Ashes test starting on November 21 due to a persistent back stress injury. While coach Andrew McDonald said the paceman has not been officially ruled out, time is becoming tight for him to be fully fit.

Back Stress Injury Concerns

Cummins, 32, has yet to resume bowling in his rehabilitation, casting doubt on his ability to participate in the Perth test. McDonald explained that recovery from back stress injuries often has an “ebb and flow,” and although Cummins was feeling more positive this week, the risk remains significant.

Time Pressure for Recovery

Coach McDonald emphasised the importance of Cummins returning to bowling at least four weeks before the Perth test to avoid further injury. “Otherwise, you start to bring in other risk factors – not being skill-ready and increased soft tissue injuries,” McDonald said, highlighting the delicate timing needed for the captain’s return.

Optimism Amidst Caution

Despite concerns, McDonald remained hopeful. He said Cummins has previously adapted to shortened preparations and could perform even if his lead-up time is limited. “We’re still optimistic and hopeful, but next week we’ll get a better gauge on where he’s at,” he added.

Impact on Australian Team Strategy

Cummins has been an ever-present figure for Australia since his Ashes debut in 2017-18. With him fit and in form, Australia has never lost the urn since reclaiming it. Losing him for Perth alone would require significant adjustments, including former captain Steve Smith potentially stepping in as captain and Scott Boland joining the pace attack.

Upcoming Ashes Matches

The first Ashes test in Perth is followed by matches in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and concluding in Sydney in early January. Australia will be closely monitoring Cummins’ rehabilitation to decide on his availability for the entire series.

Significance of Cummins’ Participation

Cummins’ presence is critical for Australia’s bowling attack and leadership on the field. His absence could disrupt team dynamics and strategy, particularly in maintaining dominance over England in the Ashes.

Next Steps in Rehabilitation

Cummins and the Australian coaching staff will continue to assess his fitness closely. Decisions will be made based on his ability to bowl effectively and safely without risking further injury, ensuring both the captain’s health and the team’s competitive readiness.
