Australian cricketer Tim David created history on Tuesday night in St. Kitts. He smashed the fastest T20 International (T20I) century ever by an Australian. He reached this milestone in just 37 balls. The match was played against the West Indies, and Australia was chasing a big target of 215 runs.
Enters the Game and Starts Strong
Tim David walked in to bat after Australia lost their third wicket. It was the last ball of the Powerplay, a period when only two fielders are allowed outside the circle, making it easier to score.
Right from his first ball, David showed his aggressive intent. He hit a four on the very first delivery. He then started hitting huge sixes in the next few overs. This helped Australia gain momentum in their difficult chase.
Powerful Sixes Against Spin Bowlers
David especially attacked the spin bowlers. He hit many sixes in three overs against Gudakesh Motie, Akeal Hosein, and Roston Chase, who are all West Indian spin bowlers.
He hit a total of nine sixes in just three overs, which is an extraordinary achievement. His powerful shots excited the fans and changed the game in Australia’s favor.
Breaking Records with His Half-Century
Tim David reached his 50 runs in just 16 balls, which was another big achievement. This became the fastest T20I fifty in Australian history.
Before him, Marcus Stoinis and Travis Head held the record by scoring 50 in 17 balls. Now, David has beaten both with his incredible performance.
A Maiden Century in T20 Internationals
This was Tim David’s first-ever century in a T20 International match. Not only that, but he also broke the record for the fastest T20I century by an Australian man.
The previous record was held by his teammate Josh Inglis, who had scored a century in 43 balls against Scotland in Edinburgh last year. David has now set a new standard with his 37-ball century.
Using Andre Russell’s Bat
One interesting moment from the match was the bat Tim David used. It had the name of Andre Russell, a famous West Indian cricketer who recently retired. David used a bat labeled “Dre Russ”, which surprised many.
David later explained in the post-match presentation that he had been carrying the bat for a year and thought this was the best time to use it. He said, “I’ve spent a lot of time working on power hitting, but now I’m working on my shot selection... I’ve been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year, and it felt like the best time to use it.”
Enjoying the Moment
David looked very happy after the match. He said, “I was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have some time at home and get my body right. I didn’t think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia, so I’m stoked.”
This shows how much the moment meant to him, especially since he was coming back from an injury.
A Strong Partnership With Mitchell Owen
David was not alone in his efforts. He shared a 128-run partnership with Mitchell Owen, who also played very well. Owen scored 36 runs off just 16 balls, giving good support to David.
Together, they helped Australia reach the target in just 16.1 overs, which is very fast in T20 cricket. This win also gave Australia a 3-0 lead in the five-match T20 series, making it impossible for West Indies to win the series.
Return From Injury
This was Tim David’s first match since May 23, when he suffered a hamstring injury. Because of that injury, he missed the playoffs in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where his team Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the title for the first time.
This powerful comeback shows how determined David is and how well he has recovered from his injury.
A Huge Number of Sixes
In his innings, David hit 11 sixes, which is an amazing number. Among all Australian batters in T20 history, only Aaron Finch has hit more sixes (14) in a single T20 International innings.
This puts Tim David’s innings among the best ever by an Australian in T20 cricket.
Where David Stands in World Records
David’s 37-ball century is not just an Australian record — it also places him among the fastest T20I centuries in matches between Full-Member nations (major cricketing countries). Here's a quick look:
