Pakistan’s star cricketer Babar Azam has etched his name into the record books by surpassing Indian captain Rohit Sharma to become the highest run-scorer in men’s T20 International (T20I) cricket. The milestone came during Pakistan’s dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa in Lahore on Friday, marking a historic moment for the 30-year-old batsman.
Babar achieved this remarkable feat with a stylish drive off South African spinner Donovan Ferreira to long-off, taking his total runs in T20Is to 4,234. He finished unbeaten on 11, guiding Pakistan to a comfortable chase and sealing the win. The packed Gaddafi Stadium erupted in applause as fans celebrated their captain’s latest milestone.
Before this match, Rohit Sharma held the record for most T20I runs with 4,231 runs in 159 matches. Babar, who reached the landmark in just 130 matches, overtook the Indian legend’s record in fewer innings, making his achievement even more impressive. Rohit had announced his retirement from the T20I format after leading India to victory in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup.
Since making his debut in 2016, Babar Azam has been a model of consistency for Pakistan in all formats of the game. His T20I record now stands at 4,234 runs, including 36 fifties and three centuries, at a strike rate of 129. Known for his classical batting technique and calm temperament, Babar’s success reflects his ability to adapt and perform under pressure across different conditions.
Babar’s return to the T20I squad after almost a year proved to be timely and impactful. He was recalled after Fakhar Zaman was rested for the series against South Africa. In the opening match in Rawalpindi, Babar was dismissed for a two-ball duck, narrowly missing his chance to surpass Rohit’s record. However, he made no mistake in Lahore, calmly achieving the milestone to the delight of his teammates and fans.
The match itself was a one-sided affair. Pakistan’s bowlers restricted South Africa to a modest total before the hosts chased it down with ease. Babar anchored the innings with his trademark composure, while his opening partner played aggressively at the other end to ensure a smooth victory. The win also gave Pakistan an unassailable lead in the series, reaffirming their strength in the shorter format.
With this record, Babar Azam continues to cement his status as one of the modern greats of international cricket. His achievements extend beyond T20Is—he is among the fastest to 1,000 runs in ODIs and holds multiple records across formats for Pakistan. His ability to perform consistently against top teams has made him one of the most respected batters in the world.
Despite his success, Babar’s strike rate has often been a subject of debate among cricket experts. Critics have pointed out that his strike rate of 129 is lower compared to some modern power hitters. However, his supporters argue that Babar’s role is that of a stabilizer—building innings around him while allowing others to play more freely. His match-winning performances continue to justify his approach.
As a leader, Babar has played a key role in shaping Pakistan’s modern cricket identity. Under his captaincy, Pakistan has seen significant improvements in consistency, especially in white-ball cricket. His calm and tactical approach has earned him praise from both teammates and cricket analysts. Even when not leading, his presence in the dressing room inspires confidence and composure.
Babar aims to continue contributing to Pakistan’s success across all formats. With major international tournaments approaching, including the ICC Champions Trophy, he will be crucial in guiding Pakistan’s batting lineup. His focus remains on achieving team success rather than individual milestones, but breaking Rohit’s record is a moment he—and his country—will cherish for years to come.
For Pakistan cricket fans, this achievement is more than just a statistic—it’s a source of national pride. Babar’s journey from a young boy in Lahore’s streets to the top of the T20I charts is a story of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. His success represents a new era for Pakistan cricket, blending tradition with modern skill and ambition.
