Bangladesh is facing a tense situation as authorities prepare for the funeral of Sharif Osman Hadi, a radical anti-India leader whose death has triggered widespread violence and unrest. Hadi died in a hospital in Singapore, a week after he was shot by masked gunmen in Dhaka. His death has led to protests, arson, and attacks in several parts of the country, forcing the interim government to appeal for calm while strengthening security across major cities.
Hadi was a spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha and a key figure in the July uprising that removed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Known for his strong anti-India views, he had earlier circulated controversial maps of a so-called “Greater Bangladesh” that included Indian territories. He was attacked on December 12 while returning from Friday prayers in an auto-rickshaw, when a bullet hit his head. After initial treatment in Dhaka, doctors advised that he be shifted to Singapore, where he later died.
Following his death, violent protests erupted in Dhaka and other cities. Radical groups set fire to several media offices, while cultural organisations were also attacked, including the office of Udichi Shilpigoshthi and the premises of Chhayanat, where musical instruments, artworks, and important documents were destroyed. This wave of violence has raised serious concerns about public safety and law and order.
The government has tightened security for Hadi’s funeral prayers, which will take place near the National Parliament Building in Dhaka. Drones have been banned in the area, public viewing of the body is not allowed, and attendees have been instructed not to carry bags or heavy items. As per family wishes, Hadi will be buried near the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Authorities are deploying armed forces across the city to prevent further violence.
Police have released photos of two suspects linked to the killing and announced a reward of about $42,000 for information. Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has promised strict action against the killers and urged citizens to maintain peace. Despite these appeals, attacks have continued, including vandalism at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, demolition of a former ruling party office, and stone-pelting at the residence of the Indian High Commission official in Chattogram. The government has declared a one-day state mourning as Bangladesh struggles to restore stability amid growing unrest.
