Rising Violence: Bangladesh Student Leader Injured Ahead of Elections

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

As Bangladesh heads towards elections, political violence is on the rise. On Monday, a student leader was shot in the head by unidentified assailants in Khulna.

The individual has been named as Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar, a prominent member of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and an influential figure in its labor division.

The attack occurred around 11:45 am at a residence in the Sonadanga neighborhood of Khulna. Local sources indicate that Sikdar was targeted inside the house when armed attackers approached and fired from close range.

Sikdar was hit on the left side of his head and was quickly transported to Khulna Medical College Hospital for urgent medical assistance. Subsequently, he was transferred to another facility for a CT scan to assess the head injury. He remains under medical supervision.

At the moment of the shooting, Sikdar was engaged in preparations for a labor rally organized by his party in Khulna. He plays a crucial role as an organizer and serves as the NCP’s labor group coordinator.

Local police have confirmed the occurrence and are currently investigating the motives and identities of the attackers.

This incident adds to a backdrop of turmoil in Bangladesh, marked by violent protests following the recent murder of a controversial political figure, which incited unrest in various cities.

With national elections scheduled for February 2026, political instability is evident. Reports indicate a rise in street violence and concerns among minority groups.

Experts in the political field caution that such acts of violence illustrate the increasingly dangerous climate as the election date approaches. There are widespread fears that disturbances may escalate further.

Authorities have pledged to implement measures aimed at maintaining peace and order, ensuring a safe election process. Currently, the condition of the injured student leader is being closely monitored.
