Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Opens Its Doors in Abu Dhabi

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has officially launched in Abu Dhabi, becoming the first international branch of the leading eye hospital in the United States. This event highlights a significant advancement for specialized healthcare within the UAE.

The opening aligns with a recent announcement by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, showcasing the emirate’s commitment to establishing itself as a premier destination for advanced medical services. The facility now provides top-tier diagnostic evaluations and surgical solutions across various ophthalmic fields.

To celebrate the launch, Her Excellency Dr Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, toured the new center with key DoH officials and Bascom Palmer leaders from both locales. The visit emphasized the institute's specialized diagnostic areas, cutting-edge surgical areas, and patient-centric workflows aimed at delivering superior healthcare.

Dr Al Ghaithi remarked that the institute's launch signifies Abu Dhabi’s ongoing dedication to providing exceptional healthcare services to both residents and international community members. She emphasized that this collaboration enhances clinical excellence, promotes knowledge sharing, and aligns with the emirate’s vision for a cohesive and innovative healthcare system prepared for future challenges.

Situated in Mohamed Bin Zayed City, the facility encompasses 70,000 square feet, marking a substantial expansion in the city's eye care capabilities. It provides a variety of services including refractive and laser treatment, sophisticated surgical procedures, and extensive ophthalmic care for both routine and complex cases.

Dr Abdul Rahim Jaffar, Board Member of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi, commended the UAE’s leadership for its visionary approach towards establishing a top-tier healthcare sector. He indicated that the institute symbolizes strong international collaboration and guarantees that patients in the UAE and surrounding regions have access to premier care standards, education, and research.

Dr Dipen J Parekh, CEO of the University of Miami Health System, noted that the Abu Dhabi location facilitates seamless transitions in patient care from the Miami healthcare network. This integration fosters a continuous care model while enhancing quality and outcomes through joint data initiatives.

Dr Zain Kenderian, CEO of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi, mentioned that the center's digital infrastructure, clinical practices, and scheduling systems have been customized to cater to the diverse needs of Abu Dhabi’s population. From the outset, the emphasis has been on streamlining patient experience while upholding the high standards that have established Bascom Palmer as a leader in ophthalmology in the United States.

Clinical leaders highlighted that treatment protocols from Miami have been thoughtfully adjusted to consider the specific demographics of the region, ensuring that care strategies are globally recognized while remaining relevant to local needs. The institute will initially focus on areas such as retinal, corneal, oncologic, and pediatric ophthalmology to meet urgent demands while developing long-term specialized capacity.

The establishment of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Abu Dhabi reaffirms the city’s status as a primary regional center for clinical excellence. It will also minimize the necessity for patients to travel great distances for advanced eye treatments, providing comprehensive assistance services including visa support, concierge services, and packaged recovery options for patients from the GCC and beyond.

With operations now initiated, this institute stands as a formidable addition to Abu Dhabi's healthcare framework and establishes a new standard for specialized eye care in the Middle East.
