South Africa showcased a solid performance on the opening day of the second Test against India in Guwahati on Saturday. Although they lost Ryan Rickleton early on, captain Temba Bavuma steadied the innings, guiding the team to a lunch score of 156 for two. The visitors appeared composed and maintained pressure on the Indian bowlers during the morning session.
Rickleton and Aiden Markram laid a strong foundation, sharing 82 runs for the first wicket. Markram played cautiously while punishing loose balls, reaching 38 before his dismissal. Rickleton contributed 35 runs but fell prey to spinner Kuldeep Yadav's breakthrough. Nevertheless, the South African batting line-up continued to score steadily despite the Indian bowling attack's inability to create significant pressure.
Bavuma, who scored the only half-century in the first Test in Kolkata, appeared at ease once more, reaching 36 at lunch with poise. His companion, Tristan Stubbs, also showed confidence, remaining unbeaten on 32. This partnership allowed South Africa to accumulate runs without taking unnecessary risks.
Today's match at Barsapara Cricket Stadium holds significance as it marks the first Test match ever to be held at this venue. Due to the early sunrise and quicker light fade in the northeastern region, traditional break timings were altered. Instead of the customary lunch, the tea break was observed first, providing a unique experience for the players and spectators alike.
Prior to the match, Bavuma opted to bat first after winning the toss. The pitch presented a fair amount of grass, yet displayed no cracks or uneven bounce. Following a match played on a turning pitch in Kolkata, which India won within three days, South Africa welcomed these improved batting conditions. Bavuma’s choice to bat first was substantiated as the openers handled the pitch expertly.
India had an early opportunity to dismiss Markram when Jasprit Bumrah induced an edge; however, KL Rahul dropped the catch at slip. This misstep enabled South Africa to settle in and construct a solid base. Stand-in captain Rishabh Pant introduced spin in the 14th over, hoping to clinch a breakthrough. Washington Sundar bowled steadily but failed to trouble the batsmen significantly.
Kuldeep Yadav then joined from the other end in an effort to break the opening partnership. However, the South African batsmen maintained their patience until Bumrah returned for a final over before tea, where Markram fell to an inside edge that struck his stumps.
Post-tea, Kuldeep struck again, dismissing Rickleton caught behind. Despite the loss of two wickets, South Africa remained robust. Bavuma’s solid technique and Stubbs’ agile footwork against the spinners saw them add 74 runs for the third wicket without further loss. Their partnership has positioned South Africa favorably early in the match.
India will hope for a stronger comeback from their bowlers in the next session, while South Africa aims to put together a substantial first-innings total. With the pitch still favoring batters, the match promises to deliver an exhilarating contest.
