On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a decisive tone for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, highlighting the significant turnout in the recent Bihar elections as a testament to India's democratic vitality. Addressing the nation, he celebrated the notable participation from women voters, affirming that India has “lived democracy and reinforced its belief in it”.
In a direct message to opposition leaders still grappling with the aftermath of their substantial loss in the Bihar assembly elections, PM Modi advised them to refrain from theatrics in the House. Without mentioning any parties specifically, he urged leaders to prioritize action over drama, asserting that they should be ready to move past the Bihar elections, even if their recent comments suggested otherwise.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance achieved a sweeping victory in Bihar, clinching 202 out of 243 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA bloc garnered only 35 seats. PM Modi cautioned that this triumph should not lead to complacency within the ruling coalition, emphasizing a commitment to serious legislative endeavors.
The Winter Session, which will conclude on December 19, is anticipated to encounter challenges, particularly regarding the Opposition's insistence on discussing the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. During key meetings over the weekend—the all-party meeting and the Business Advisory Committee for both Houses—Opposition members stressed that progress in the session hinges on addressing SIR. Some warned that the government could be held accountable if proceedings were disrupted.
Nevertheless, following the all-party discussions, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju noted that no party overtly threatened to disrupt the session. He reassured that the government is dedicated to maintaining parliamentary productivity and asserted that disagreements should not hinder progress.
In the meantime, the government has prepared 10 new bills for introduction and initiated discussions to commemorate 150 years of Vande Mataram. With both factions firmly established in their positions, the opening day foreshadows potential disputes, even while calls for cooperation and patience persist.
