Bishop Ronald Hicks Appointed as New York's Archbishop

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a pivotal move for the American Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Ronald Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, as the new archbishop of New York. This influential position comes at a time of political tension, particularly concerning immigration policies under the Trump administration.

Hicks takes over from Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who retires at 75, following the Church's guidelines requiring bishops to step down at that age. The Vatican delayed the announcement until Dolan had completed critical tasks, such as establishing a $300 million fund to aid victims of sexual abuse against the archdiocese.

The appointment signals a new chapter for the Church in the U.S. Pope Leo XIV, the first American Pope, aims to harmonize church leadership with the ideals of immigrant rights and social justice, a vision Hicks is seen as capable of fulfilling in this key Catholic hub.

Shared Roots and Advocate for Immigrants

At 58, Bishop Hicks shares a Chicago upbringing with Pope Leo XIV, fostering a bond that informs their mutual dedication to diverse communities. Hicks has substantial experience aiding impoverished and immigrant families, having worked in El Salvador for five years overseeing charitable efforts that supported orphanages across Latin America.

Father Eusebius Martis, a long-time colleague, described Hicks as a kind-hearted leader, fortunate to be leading New York. Hicks has spoken out on immigration topics, especially criticizing immigration raids by the Trump administration and advocating for reforms to respect human dignity.

An Important Encounter with the Future Pope

Despite their common backgrounds, Hicks and Prevost met for the first time in 2024. During that encounter, they discovered shared leadership philosophies and personal interests, establishing a connection conducive to Hicks' new role.

Hicks’ Clerical Journey

Prior to his role in Joliet, Hicks was a parish priest and dean at Mundelein Seminary. His placement as vicar general in the Chicago Archdiocese by progressive Cardinal Blase Cupich highlights Hicks’ reputation and experience within church administration.

Challenges Await in New York

The archdiocese of New York is one of the largest in the nation, representing around 2.5 million Catholics across several areas. Hicks will play a crucial role in national Catholic discussions and address significant political matters.

Cardinal Dolan, in his tenure since 2009, cultivated a strong national profile and showed support for LGBTQ+ individuals while navigating relationships with political figures, including former President Trump.

One of Hicks’ foremost tasks will be overseeing the $300 million settlement fund for abuse victims, necessitating asset sales and budget cuts. His prior experience addresses such challenges as he leads the Joliet Diocese in the wake of an investigative report revealing abuse cases.

A Shift in U.S. Catholic Leadership

The selection of Ronald Hicks heralds a significant realignment in U.S. Catholic leadership. With Pope Leo XIV steering the Church toward compassion-driven policies, Hicks is anticipated to embody these principles in one of the most important archdioceses globally. Observers and communities alike will be keen to see how Hicks navigates complex issues surrounding immigration and the Church’s roles under the current administration.
