Unexploded Homemade Bombs Discovered in Wake of Bondi Shooting

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

On Monday, Australian authorities disclosed that homemade bombs were launched at participants of a gathering at Bondi Beach prior to a tragic mass shooting, but they did not detonate. This incident, which occurred on December 14 during a Jewish Hanukkah celebration, resulted in fifteen fatalities and numerous injuries.

The assailants, Sajid Akram, 50, who was shot dead by police, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, are facing multiple charges, including murder and terrorism. Investigations reveal that they had meticulously planned this act for several months and even scouted the Bondi area two days before the attack.

Documents from the court outline the possession of firearms and explosives by the duo, which included shotguns, a Beretta rifle, three pipe bombs, a tennis ball bomb, and a substantial improvised explosive device. Law enforcement confirmed that the bombs were indeed thrown but failed to ignite. Additionally, bomb-making materials, 3D-printed weapon components, and copies of the Quran were discovered at their residence in Campsie.

In light of these events, the New South Wales government has convened parliament to discuss stricter gun legislation. Proposed changes include limiting gun ownership to four per individual (or a maximum of ten for farmers), prohibiting the exhibition of terror-related symbols, and empowering police to remove face coverings during protests. Premier Chris Minns emphasized the importance of these measures for ensuring public safety and upholding community tranquility.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has faced backlash regarding the increase in antisemitism, experiencing public disapproval during a memorial at Bondi. He has since issued a statement expressing sorrow and urging for national solidarity, articulating, “I bear the weight of responsibility for this tragedy and deeply regret what the Jewish community and our nation have endured.”

Moreover, the government is rolling out new laws aimed at prohibiting adult radicalization of children and plans to preserve public tributes from Bondi Beach for exhibition at the Sydney Jewish Museum and the Australian Jewish Historical Society. This shocking event has compelled the nation to urgently reassess gun laws and enhance efforts against hate-driven crimes.
