New Zealand spinner Michael Bracewell has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a calf injury. The Black Caps confirmed that he will not take part in the tournament after suffering a setback in his recovery.
Bracewell first injured his calf during the ODI series against India last month. Although he had recovered, he reinjured the same calf before Sunday’s match against Afghanistan. Scans showed that he will need about three weeks to fully recover, which means he cannot play in the World Cup.
Head coach Rob Walter said it is very disappointing for Bracewell, as playing for New Zealand means a lot to him. He added that Bracewell worked very hard to return but was unlucky to suffer another injury.
Off-spinning all-rounder Cole McConchie will travel to India and join the team as a reserve player. Fast bowler Ben Sears will also be part of the travelling reserves. McConchie recently had a strong domestic T20 season with Canterbury Kings, taking 14 wickets with an economy rate of 7.71.
Walter said McConchie brings experience and balance to the squad. He has played 145 T20 matches, including 12 internationals, and his experience will help the team during the tournament.
New Zealand recently defeated UAE by 10 wickets and will next face South Africa on Sunday as they continue their T20 World Cup campaign.
