Broadcast Rights for FIFA World Cup 2026 in India and China Remain Unsettled

Post by : Shweta

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 draws near, significant uncertainty looms over the television and digital broadcasting rights in India and China, two pivotal media markets. While FIFA has secured agreements in over 175 territories, the negotiations for these two countries continue to face challenges, leaving countless football enthusiasts anxious about potential viewing limitations.

Set to commence on June 11, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will occur in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the largest edition in the tournament's history with 48 participating teams and 104 matches. FIFA has noteworthy partnerships with broadcasters including FOX Sports and Telemundo in the United States, the BBC and ITV in the UK, Bell Media in Canada, along with prominent networks across Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia. Yet, the broadcast scenario for India and China remains unclear.

According to reports by Reuters, FIFA dismissed a $20 million bid from the Reliance-Disney partnership in India, citing the amount as insufficient compared to FIFA's expectations, which initially pegged the Indian rights package at nearly $100 million before revising their demands. Sony reportedly abstained from submitting a formal offer after evaluating the associated commercial risks.

The scheduling of the tournament poses a significant challenge for Indian broadcasters since the matches will air late at night or early morning for local viewers. Media analysts predict this could lead to decreased television ratings and dwindling advertising revenues when compared to earlier tournaments played in more viewer-friendly time zones. Additionally, cricket's stronghold on India's sports landscape makes broadcasters wary of extensive investments in football rights.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, India remains a crucial market for FIFA, thanks to its expansive digital audience. The final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, featuring Argentina and France, garnered impressive streaming figures on JioCinema, with millions tuning in online. FIFA is keen to secure a robust long-term commercial deal, given India's burgeoning digital sports market.

In China, a similar scenario persists as the state broadcaster CCTV has yet to finalize its agreement for the 2026 World Cup. While discussions are said to be ongoing behind closed doors, FIFA has not announced any confirmed Chinese broadcast partner. Experts suggest that the declining interest in football coupled with broader economic challenges is impacting the negotiations.

This delay is particularly notable as India and China together encompass nearly one-third of the global population and represent a significant portion of international sports streaming audiences. During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, both nations greatly contributed to the digital viewership numbers. Analysts warn that failing to establish broadcast agreements in these crucial markets could diminish FIFA’s global reach and commercial revenue during one of the tournament's largest editions.

FIFA has indicated that negotiations are still in progress with broadcasters in both territories but maintain that these discussions are confidential at this time. The organization remains optimistic that agreements will be reached ahead of the tournament kickoff. However, with the event swiftly approaching, the pressure mounts on all parties to finalize arrangements, ensuring that millions of eager fans are not left without coverage for the World Cup.
