U.S. Military Strikes Empty Iranian Oil Tankers in Gulf of Oman

Post by : Shweta

The U.S. military has reported conducting airstrikes on two Iranian-flagged oil tankers that were empty, located near the Gulf of Oman, in light of heightened tensions in the region. Officials from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated these vessels were attempting to breach an existing American naval blockade linked to ongoing conflicts involving Iran and its security operations. Both ships were disabled prior to docking at Iranian ports.

According to CENTCOM, the two tankers were intercepted on Friday after U.S. forces observed their trajectory toward Iranian waters, defying blockade conditions. The military's statement indicated the vessels were “unladen,” meaning no oil or cargo was aboard at the time of the strikes. Additionally, American officials noted that another Iranian tanker had been disabled earlier this week during a related mission.

Reports suggest that a U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet, launched from the USS George H.W. Bush, played a key role in the operation. The aircraft utilized precision weapons aimed at the smokestacks of the tankers, identified in various reports as the Sea Star III and Sevda. CENTCOM later clarified that all three targeted vessels are now “no longer en route to Iran.”

This latest military action forms part of an extensive U.S. strategy to uphold a naval blockade around Iran that commenced in April 2026. Initiated by the Trump administration amidst escalating regional tensions and allegations surrounding Iranian military endeavors in the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, U.S. officials assert that the operation aims to curtail Iranian oil transport and secure commercial shipping routes.

In response, Iran has vehemently condemned the strikes, accusing Washington of breaching an existing ceasefire. Iranian officials characterized the attacks as perilous and cautioned that ongoing military aggression could foster greater instability in the region. Tehran contends that recent U.S. actions jeopardize diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing tensions between the countries.

The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial maritime route, with a substantial portion of global oil exports traversing this region daily. Amid the persistent crisis, oil markets remain particularly sensitive to military actions in the area. Following the news of the tanker strikes, global oil prices reportedly surged, exacerbating fears of further U.S.-Iran confrontation.

CENTCOM has indicated that approximately 70 commercial ships have been rerouted or barred from accessing Iranian ports since the blockade's initiation. U.S. military personnel confirmed that enforcement operations are active throughout the Gulf, supported by warships, surveillance aircraft, and allied naval forces. The U.S. administration reiterated its commitment to safeguarding international shipping lanes while compelling Iran towards broader security and diplomatic arrangements.

Despite the recent military escalation, diplomatic dialogues between Washington and Tehran persist, facilitated by international mediators. President Donald Trump has previously asserted that a tenuous ceasefire with Iran technically remains intact, even as both parties engage in mutual accusations of violations. Analysts caution that any further military actions within the Strait of Hormuz could swiftly disrupt global energy supplies and heighten geopolitical tensions throughout the Middle East.
