Buck Rogers Star Gil Gerard Dies at 82 After Cancer Battle

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Gil Gerard, the actor best known for playing the sci-fi hero William “Buck” Rogers, has died at the age of 82. His manager confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday while in hospice care after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer. After his death, his wife Janet Gerard shared a message he had written for fans, encouraging them to enjoy life and follow what brings love and happiness.

Gerard became famous for starring in the television series “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century,” which aired from 1979 to 1981. The show became popular at a time when interest in science fiction was growing after the success of Star Wars. The story followed a NASA pilot from the 20th century who wakes up 500 years later in a futuristic world. The series also featured his robot friend Twiki and space pilot Wilma Deering, played by Erin Gray.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Gerard worked in television commercials before moving into acting roles in TV shows and films. He appeared in projects such as “Hear No Evil,” “Sidekicks,” and later hosted the reality show “Code 3,” which followed firefighters across the United States. He also made guest appearances on popular shows including “Days of Our Lives.”

Later in life, Gerard spoke openly about his struggles with addiction and weight. His journey was shown in the 2007 documentary “Action Hero Makeover,” which followed his health transformation after surgery. Gerard was married four times before marrying Janet, with whom he spent 18 years. He had one son, actor Gilbert Vincent Gerard. In his final message, Gerard reflected on his life journey and said he was grateful for the people, love, and experiences that made his life meaningful.
