Calgary has been hit by an unexpected winter storm this week, with fierce winds and blowing snow creating perilous driving conditions citywide. Motorists struggled with drastically reduced visibility, icy surfaces, and congestion, leading to serious safety warnings from both police and driving specialists.
Authorities noted that while snowfall totals were not particularly alarming, the strong winds—some peaking at 80 km/h—intensified the situation. In certain regions, visibility plummeted to mere feet, complicating the ability of drivers to see other vehicles, road markers, or potential threats. Consequently, city roads and highways turned hazardous very quickly.
A critical concern raised during the storm was the tendency of drivers to activate their hazard lights in low visibility. Although many believe this makes their vehicles more noticeable, experts warn that it can actually lead to confusion. Hazard lights are intended to indicate a vehicle that is stopped or a dangerous situation ahead— not for regular operation in inclement weather.
When several vehicles operate with their hazard lights on, it becomes challenging for other drivers to assess speed, distance, and motion. Moreover, using hazard lights disables turn signals, hindering the ability to indicate lane changes or turns, which heightens the risk of accidents during already tense conditions.
Law enforcement and driving instructors are advising motorists to consider safer practices. These include decreasing speed, extending following distance, and utilizing proper headlights and taillights instead of just daytime running lights. Ensuring that vehicles are ready for winter conditions is also vital, with winter tires particularly stressed for better traction on snow and ice.
Experts strongly recommend that if severe weather arises, the best option is often to avoid traveling altogether. If conditions worsen unexpectedly, drivers should find a safe location to stop until conditions improve, as winter weather can be unpredictable.
Given the increasing number of traffic incidents this year, officials are urging Calgarians to remember that winter driving requires patience, preparation, and caution. Slowing down, staying visible with proper lighting, and limiting unnecessary travel can contribute to safer roads amid unpredictable winter storms.
