Can Tho Implements New Dual Admission Strategy for Grade 10

Post by : Shakul

Over 45,200 students transitioning from ninth grade are set for Can Tho's 2026-2027 high school admission cycle, as the city rolls out a dual system incorporating both entrance exams and evaluations based on academic performance. Authorities anticipate that this dual approach will alleviate pressure from exams and promote equitable access to secondary education.

The Can Tho Department of Education and Training reported 45,231 eligible junior high graduates for this year’s Grade 10 admissions. In line with ongoing digital transformation efforts, a centralized enrollment platform has been established for handling registrations, processing admissions, and announcing results seamlessly online.

The most notable aspect of this year's admissions is the introduction of two concurrent enrollment pathways. Specifically, 59 high schools will hold entrance examinations aimed at filling 23,120 spots, while 32 schools will offer places based on academic records, totaling 9,184 admissions.

Officials noted that schools opting for the record-based admissions tend to be located in areas where the number of graduates aligns well with available spots, suggesting that entrance exams may not be as beneficial in these instances and could add unnecessary stress for students and their families.

Danh Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Can Tho Department of Education and Training, indicated that this model is reflective of local educational dynamics and aims to lower social costs while facilitating continued education after junior high. Authorities believe this system fosters a more balanced and accommodating admissions process for students.

For schools facing a higher demand for places—especially in urban and densely populated areas—entrance exams continue to be the preferred admission method. Education officials emphasized that competitive exams ensure transparency, equity, and objectivity, enabling schools to select academically suitable candidates.

To guarantee an effective admission process, the department has set up 90 examination boards throughout the city, with over 450 staff members—administrators, educators, and IT personnel—receiving specialized training on the digital exam management platform. Preparatory measures concerning examination materials, logistics, security, transportation, facilities, and technical support have been completed in compliance with national standards.
