Canada Becomes the First Non-European Nation in the EU Defence Fund

Post by : Meena Hassan

Canada has officially joined the European Union’s €150 billion ($170 billion) defence initiative, SAFE, marking a historic moment as the first non-European nation to engage in this programme. Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that this step will unveil “tremendous opportunities” for Canadian defence enterprises, while also assisting in addressing critical security gaps within Europe.

Launched earlier this year, SAFE aims to bolster EU defence preparedness by 2030. The initiative prioritizes essential areas such as missile technology, artillery, drones, cyber warfare, air and missile defence, maritime protection, and safeguarding space assets. Although joint projects typically require a minimum of 65 percent of components to be sourced from within the EU, partner nations like Canada might receive certain waivers.

Carney emphasized that joining SAFE represents Canada’s larger strategy to diversify its military procurement channels and lessen dependency on the United States, especially against the backdrop of recent trade tensions. Recent negotiations between the EU and the UK concerning British membership in SAFE concluded without a consensus, mainly due to disputes regarding financial commitments.

Canada’s involvement in SAFE is projected to enhance transatlantic defence collaboration, broaden opportunities for Canadian suppliers, and draw European interest into the Canadian defence industry.
