China Contributes $2.8M to Thailand Following High-Speed Rail Incident

Post by : Meena Hassan

Amid a critical meeting held at Government House on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Zhang Jianwei, officially presented 20 million yuan ($2.8 million) in humanitarian assistance to Thailand, in response to the tragic crane collapse associated with the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Nakhon Ratchasima.

This aid package consists of 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) in cash alongside equal value in relief supplies, which were accepted by Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The Prime Minister extended profound gratitude, describing the gesture as a representation of the “brotherly bond” and enduring trust shared between Thailand and China.

Ambassador Zhang conveyed his heartfelt condolences regarding the accident, where a construction crane tragically fell on a passenger train, leading to numerous casualties. He confirmed that Chinese officials have instructed the involved companies to cooperate fully with Thai investigators ensuring complete transparency.

The ambassador noted that the high-speed rail initiative remains vital to the strategic partnership between Thailand and China, emphasizing the enhanced focus on safety measures for all stakeholders.

The assembly also provided a chance to explore wider economic collaboration. Prime Minister Anutin encouraged China to expedite the purchase of 500,000 tonnes of Thai rice, a commitment previously made with President Xi Jinping. Ambassador Zhang assured that China aims to meet these import targets this year.

Additionally, discussions touched upon tourism, with both leaders dedicated to initiatives intended to boost Chinese tourist arrivals in Thailand, aiding the nation’s economic revival.

These conversations underscored the determination of both countries to strengthen their ties, ensure project safety, and broaden trade as well as tourism partnerships, even in light of the recent disaster.
