Joint Russian-Chinese Air Patrol Near Japan Raises Alarms

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Japan heightened its alert on Tuesday as military aircraft from Russia and China executed a joint air patrol near its borders, exacerbating already strained relations between Tokyo and Beijing. The Japanese defence ministry confirmed the deployment of its fighter jets to monitor the situation.

As per the ministry's report, two Russian Tu-95 strategic bombers traversed from the Sea of Japan toward the East China Sea, where they converged with two Chinese H-6 bombers. Together, they performed an extensive long-distance patrol over the Pacific. The report also indicated that four Chinese J-16 fighter jets joined their formation, flying in the vicinity of Okinawa and Miyako islands—an area designated as international airspace.

Simultaneously, Japan flagged separate Russian military maneuvers in the Sea of Japan, which included an A-50 early-warning aircraft alongside two Su-30 fighters. This synchronized movement of Russian and Chinese aircraft has heightened anxieties in Tokyo regarding the enhancing military partnership between the two nations.

Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi described the joint flight as a “clear show of force directed at our nation,” expressing serious concerns regarding the implications for Japan's national security. He also emphasized that Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force adhered to rigorous identification protocols during the monitoring process.

Russian media later reported that the joint surveillance operation off Japan's coast lasted approximately eight hours.

Similar activities were noted by South Korea on the same day, where its military indicated that seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft entered its air defence identification zone without breaching its airspace.

The incident follows a weekend of escalating tensions when Japan accused Chinese carrier-based fighter jets of targeting radar at Japanese military aircraft, a claim that China refuted.

Tensions have been escalating between the two nations since Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi declared last month that Japan would respond should China employ military force against Taiwan in a manner that jeopardized Japan’s security.

In recent years, military collaboration between China and Russia has been on the rise, seeing joint anti-missile exercises on Russian territory and combined naval drills in the South China Sea, showcasing their deepening strategic partnership.
