In a significant political maneuver, Vijay has gained substantial backing from the Indian National Congress amid ongoing discussions on the future government in Tamil Nadu post-elections. The Congress party expressed its readiness to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, but emphasized a crucial stipulation for the partnership.
Party officials indicated that the coalition must exclude what they refer to as “communal forces” that do not uphold the Constitution of India. This declaration was made by Girish Chodankar, in charge of the All India Congress Committee for Tamil Nadu, following talks between the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party.
With Congress's support, Vijay's position in the Tamil Nadu Assembly strengthens by five additional MLAs. During the recent polls, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured 107 seats out of 234, establishing itself as the largest party. With Congress's backing, the tally reaches 112, yet Vijay remains six seats shy of the majority mark of 118 necessary to govern.
Moreover, political insiders reveal that Vijay has initiated discussions with other regional and Left factions, such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, the Communist Party of India, and the Communist Party of India Marxist. Should these parties come on board, the alliance could surpass the majority threshold, positioning Vijay to formally assume the role of Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu.
This political saga has sparked significant enthusiasm across Chennai and surrounding areas, with Vijay's dynamic entry into politics and impressive electoral results reshaping Tamil Nadu's political terrain, breaking the long-standing hegemony of the two primary Dravidian parties.
The Congress emphasized that the partnership with TVK is grounded in mutual respect, secular principles, and a shared political agenda. Leaders noted that this collaboration aims not only at government formation but could also extend to upcoming local elections, Lok Sabha contests, and Rajya Sabha selections.
In parallel, reports surfaced that certain TVK leaders met with Edappadi K. Palaniswami, head of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in Chennai. This encounter has fueled speculation regarding possible political reconfigurations and intra-alliance discord within the state.
The Congress statement also highlighted both Vijay and Rahul Gandhi’s commitment to honor the people's mandate in Tamil Nadu, aiming for a progressive and secular government that prioritizes youth growth and public well-being.
In the recently held elections, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam notably captured 108 seats, emerging as the dominant party in the assembly. In contrast, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam secured merely 59 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam finished with 47 seats. Vijay triumphed in both constituencies he contested, reportedly set to keep the Perambur seat while vacating Trichy East, potentially triggering a by-election in the near future.
