Coupang Confirms Deletion of Customer Data Following Security Incident

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The prominent South Korean e-commerce firm Coupang has announced that all customer data compromised in a recent security breach has been erased. This declaration was made on Thursday, confirming that the individual responsible has not disseminated this information further.

Reports indicate that the ex-employee accessed the personal details of around 3,000 customers, a relatively minor amount when set against Coupang's total client base of approximately 33 million users. Coupang emphasized that the former worker subsequently deleted the data without sharing it with any external parties.

Although the former employee’s identity has been established, Coupang did not divulge further specifics. The individual has reportedly acknowledged involvement in the incident. Park Dae-jun, Coupang’s CEO, expressed public regret for the breach, labeling it a significant lapse in customer data protection.

In light of this, South Korea’s ministry of science announced that an investigation is still in progress. They clarified that the claims made by Coupang remain unverified by governmental authorities. Officials criticized the company for disclosing information related to the breach prior to the completion of the investigation.

A specialized investigation team, led by the science ministry and comprising private-sector specialists, aims to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the data access, possible vulnerabilities within company systems, and any potential legal infractions.

This breach marks one of the most severe data security breaches in South Korea in years. Earlier in the month, President Lee Jae Myung advocated for stricter penalties against Coupang, which is listed on U.S. stock exchanges, should corporate negligence be established.

The incident has heightened public scrutiny regarding how major tech and retail firms safeguard user personal information. With the rise of online shopping, the public demands assurance that their data remains secure. The eventual outcomes of the ongoing investigation will draw significant attention and could usher in stricter data protection regulations in South Korea.
