Fatal Crane Collapse in Thailand Claims Two Lives, Five Injured

Post by : Meena Hassan

On Thursday, a crane fell on a bustling road in Samut Sakhon province, near Bangkok, tragically crushing two vehicles and claiming two lives, according to police reports. Five additional individuals sustained injuries in the incident.

The crane was part of an elevated highway construction effort when it collapsed onto the roadway below, ensnaring motorists and inflicting significant damage. First responders arrived promptly to assist those hurt and secure the scene.

This somber event follows another crane mishap just a day earlier in northeastern Thailand, which resulted in the deaths of 32 train passengers. The incident occurred in Nakhon Ratchasima province where a crane involved in constructing a high-speed rail line fell, causing a train derailment. Out of 195 passengers, 66 were injured, prompting a comprehensive inquiry into safety protocols related to large infrastructure initiatives.

Officials in Samut Sakhon stated that the recent collapse underscores persistent safety issues within Thailand's construction sector, which has experienced multiple deadly incidents in recent years. Authorities have pressed construction firms to adhere to stringent safety regulations and pledge a detailed investigation into the cause of Thursday’s collapse.

Emergency teams acted swiftly to clear the wreckage and administer medical assistance to the injured. Local government officials also cautioned residents and drivers in the vicinity to steer clear of the area as rescue operations and inspections proceed.

The government is under growing pressure to improve safety standards in infrastructure projects in light of repeated crane-related tragedies that endanger both workers and civilians. Investigators are set to assess equipment, construction methods, and adherence to safety regulations to avert future disasters.
