Curfew Enforced at Newark's Delaney Hall Amid Protests

Post by : Shweta

In response to intensified protests and growing unrest surrounding the Delaney Hall immigration detention centre in Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Ras Baraka has implemented a nightly curfew. This decision follows a series of confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement amid criticism of conditions within the facility.

The curfew, which restricts access from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., affects the area surrounding Delaney Hall. City officials have also limited pedestrian and vehicular traffic near the center to those conducting official business, as tensions flared during the protests.

The unrest began as detainees reportedly undertook hunger strikes and work stoppages to voice grievances regarding living conditions and delays in their immigration cases. Advocacy groups have been active in calling for greater oversight and transparency regarding the conditions at the detention centre.

As protests escalated, clashes with police became more common, leading to the deployment of crowd-control measures. Several arrests were made as authorities sought to maintain order and prevent blockades that disrupted operations at Delaney Hall.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has lent her support to local authorities, providing additional state police resources to manage the situation, which has raised public safety concerns amid the ongoing tensions.

Delaney Hall has long drawn criticism since its reopening as a major immigration detention center under federal contract. Operated by the GEO Group for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), it has faced scrutiny from a variety of stakeholders, including immigration advocates and local political leaders.

Mayor Baraka has been an outspoken critic of the facility for some time, advocating for stricter oversight and questioning whether it fully complies with local regulations. His involvement in prior disputes over Delaney Hall has garnered national media attention.

Despite the unrest, officials have confirmed that family visitation programs have resumed at the detention center after being temporarily suspended. Advocates are continuing to push for improved access and conditions for the detainees.

Federal officials have defended the facility, asserting that detainee safety is a priority and that claims of mistreatment are unfounded. However, protest organizers argue for stronger reforms to address concerns related to detainee rights and conditions.

This situation has gained significant attention amid a wider national discourse regarding immigration enforcement and detention policies. Political figures are vocal as tension continues to simmer at the facility.

As the curfew remains in effect, officials are urging calm among residents and protesters. With expected ongoing demonstrations, Delaney Hall will likely stay a focal point in the ongoing national dialogue surrounding immigration issues.
