Danish and Greenland Representatives Urge U.S. Against Greenland Acquisition

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Danish and Greenlandic representatives have intensified their diplomatic campaign in Washington to dissuade former U.S. President Donald Trump from reasserting his interest in acquiring Greenland, a strategically vital island in the Arctic.

During a meeting on Thursday with the White House National Security Council, Denmark’s ambassador to the U.S., Jesper Møller Sørensen, alongside Jacob Isbosethsen, Greenland’s chief representative in the capital, addressed Trump’s recent comments implying the U.S. could either purchase Greenland or pursue it through military means.

Officials from Denmark have verified the meeting but requested anonymity as they were not sanctioned to speak publicly about it. The White House has yet to provide a response to inquiries regarding the ongoing talks.

Alongside key discussions at the White House, the Danish and Greenland delegations have also engaged with various U.S. legislators, aiming to create political momentum to dissuade any U.S. takeover efforts of Greenland.

In the forthcoming week, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is anticipated to convene with Danish officials, where this topic will likely be revisited.

Greenland, functioning as an autonomous territory of Denmark, possesses significant strategic relevance owing to its Arctic location.
