In a bid to address the critical air quality crisis, Delhi, recognized as one of the most polluted cities globally, has announced stringent measures. On Wednesday, officials rolled out restrictions on vehicle movement, office attendance, and construction activities to safeguard public health.
Delhi's air quality index (AQI), home to 30 million residents, has hovered in the 'severe' category for several consecutive days, often exceeding 450. Heavy smog and pollution have dangerously reduced visibility, affecting transportation including flights and daily commutes.
The Commission for Air Quality Management has activated stage four of the Graded Response Action Plan, marking the highest alert for the city and nearby areas. This stage introduces various curbs aimed at minimizing emissions and improving air quality.
Among the new regulations, older diesel trucks that fail to comply with current emission standards are prohibited from entering the city. Additionally, all construction work, including public projects, is temporarily halted. Schools are transitioning to hybrid classes, while both private and public offices will function at 50 percent capacity, requiring remaining staff to work remotely.
The government is providing a compensation package of 10,000 rupees ($110) for daily-wage construction workers impacted by this suspension.
Delhi's Environment Minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, stated, "We are dedicated to ensuring clean air in Delhi and will implement strict measures in the coming days."
Winter pollution poses a persistent challenge in Delhi and surrounding areas. The cold, dense air traps smoke from various sources, including vehicles, construction, and crop burning from adjacent states, leading to extremely elevated pollution levels. Experts caution that such conditions significantly heighten risks of respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses.
Officials are optimistic that the newly enforced measures will contribute to reducing emissions and provide relief for residents while emphasizing the necessity for enduring solutions to Delhi's ongoing air quality crisis.
