In a tragic incident in southern Spain, 11 individuals have lost their lives, and six have sustained injuries due to a rapidly spreading wildfire, as reported by the regional government of Andalusia.
The blaze erupted near Los Gallardos in Almería, prompting the deployment of around 150 firefighters who are tirelessly working to extinguish the flames. Preliminary investigations suggest that a fallen power line might have ignited the fire, although authorities have not yet confirmed this suspicion.
First responders discovered the remains of the 11 victims scattered around the small village of Bédar, close to the ignition point.
Antonio Sanz, the Minister of Health and Emergencies in Andalusia, described the wildfire as fast and challenging to control. He mentioned a prior report of 12 fatalities, which was later corrected to reflect the current count.
Among the victims, four were located inside a vehicle, while others were found in various spots, seemingly trying to flee from the encroaching inferno.

The fire has also resulted in six injuries.
One individual had to be hospitalized for smoke inhalation, another received care for burns, and four additional patients were treated on-site for minor burns and respiratory issues stemming from heavy smoke.
As a precaution, the wildfire resulted in the closure of several thoroughfares and the evacuation of almost 1,000 residents, as reported by emergency services.
Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME), which specializes in responding to large-scale emergencies, announced its involvement in supporting local firefighting efforts in Los Gallardos.
Juanma Moreno, the regional leader of Andalusia, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, calling it “a tragedy.”
In a statement on X, Moreno remarked, “Our hearts are heavy, and we are deeply saddened by this grief.”
Earlier in May, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain would execute its most extensive wildfire response plan for the ongoing season, as reported by local outlets.
Spain is currently enduring an extended heatwave, with temperatures soaring to around 40°C (104°F). This severe weather contributes to various wildfires raging across southern Europe.
Firefighters are also tackling significant wildfires in France and Portugal, prompting mass evacuations as the threat persists.
June recorded Spain's highest average daily temperature since 1950, with certain regions predicted to see temperatures as high as 42°C (107.6°F).
The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) revealed that last year, a striking 393,000 hectares (971,000 acres) were scorched across Spain, exceeding the national average for the period from 2006 to 2024.
Experts indicate that climate change is exacerbating rising temperatures globally, with Europe warming at twice the rate of the average worldwide, according to the Copernicus climate service.
These escalating temperatures contribute to more frequent summer heatwaves, strained water supplies, and increasingly severe wildfires across the continent.
Last year marked the worst wildfire season in the European Union since records began in 2006, with over a million hectares of land consumed by flames across EU nations.
A separate study from the World Weather Attribution group at Imperial College London connected the deteriorating wildfire situations in the Mediterranean directly to climate change.
Experts are cautioning that Europe is likely to encounter more frequent and intense wildfire seasons in the coming years.
