dnata, a prominent provider in air and travel services worldwide, has unveiled plans for a significant investment of approximately A$32 million to construct a dedicated cargo terminal at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI). This initiative underlines its dedication to Australia’s aviation sector and specifically to New South Wales.
The new facility will encompass a 5,000 sqm warehouse located within WSI’s 24-hour Cargo Precinct, complemented by an additional 4,000 sqm of land. The site will be provided as a cold shell by the airport, while dnata will manage the complete development of the infrastructure, including essential systems for materials handling.
Roughly A$6 million of the entire investment is earmarked for cutting-edge equipment and technology, which will guarantee effective operations and accommodate specialized cargo like pharmaceuticals and other goods sensitive to time and temperature.
Freighter operations are anticipated to commence in July 2026, preceding the full passenger operations expected later this year. At its peak capacity, the terminal is expected to manage up to 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually, thus enhancing New South Wales' air freight capabilities.
Additionally, the project is projected to generate around 50 direct job opportunities initially, with further job creation expected as operations expand. It will also enhance employment prospects within logistics, freight forwarding, and ground handling services across Western Sydney.
According to WSI CEO Simon Hickey, the introduction of dnata solidifies the airport’s commitment to a 24-hour cargo hub, bolstering national supply chains and fostering job growth while improving freight connectivity. The cargo precinct will feature access to significant transport routes and nearby logistics hubs such as Kemps Creek and the Aerotropolis.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King highlighted that this project will facilitate Western Sydney's connection to international trade routes and contribute to the growth of Australia’s logistics sector.
The cargo precinct is designed for sustained growth, with plans to eventually accommodate at least 220,000 tonnes of freight annually and cater to as many as eight wide-body aircraft simultaneously.
This development also builds upon dnata’s prior initiative to establish a high-tech inflight catering facility at WSI, which will be capable of producing up to 3 million meals each year.
Operating across nine airports in Australia, dnata manages approximately 300,000 tonnes of cargo and accommodates over 107,000 aircraft movements annually. The company produces more than 54 million airline meals each year and employs around 8,000 staff throughout the country, reflecting its pivotal role in Australia’s aviation and logistics landscape.
