KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo — Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have once again suspended commercial flights to the eastern city of Bunia as part of efforts to curb the spread of Ebola in the region.
The latest restrictions affect Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, where officials are reinforcing preventive measures following the emergence of new Ebola cases. Authorities said the move is intended to reduce the risk of infection among travelers and strengthen efforts to contain the outbreak.
No date has been announced for the resumption of commercial air services to the city.
The decision comes only days after commercial flights resumed operations at Bunia's main airport.
On June 2, authorities reopened the airport after a 10-day closure that had been imposed as a precautionary measure against the spread of Ebola. The original suspension of commercial flights began on May 23.
Although passenger flights were halted during that period, medical and humanitarian aircraft were permitted to continue operating to ensure that health services and emergency assistance remained available.
The renewed suspension highlights the challenges health authorities face in balancing transportation needs with disease-control measures.
Officials said the latest restrictions are aimed at protecting passengers and limiting the movement of the virus as new infections are detected.
Public health authorities have not provided details regarding how long the new measures will remain in place. The continuation of medical and humanitarian flights is expected to help maintain access to essential supplies and emergency response activities.
Travel restrictions have often been used during outbreaks to slow transmission and support disease surveillance efforts.
Ebola is a severe and highly contagious viral disease that causes hemorrhagic fever and can be fatal. The virus has been responsible for multiple outbreaks across Central and East Africa over the past decades.
Health agencies across Africa continue to monitor the current situation closely. According to regional health assessments, the ongoing outbreaks affecting the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda could result in hundreds of infections if transmission is not effectively contained.
The disease spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, making early detection, isolation and contact tracing critical components of outbreak response.
Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo have repeatedly emphasized the importance of preventive measures, surveillance and coordinated responses to limit the spread of Ebola.
The renewed flight suspension in Bunia reflects a cautious approach as authorities work to contain the outbreak and prevent wider transmission in one of the country's most vulnerable regions.
As medical teams continue their response efforts, officials are expected to closely monitor the situation before deciding when commercial air traffic to Bunia can safely resume.
