Dubai has launched a pivotal effort towards environmental preservation with its Mangrove Planting Initiative in local wildlife sanctuaries. Announced at the Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, this project aims to introduce 40,000 mangrove trees within the upcoming two years, positioning it as one of the UAE’s most extensive mangrove restoration endeavors.
Recognized for their essential role in fostering biodiversity and safeguarding coastal areas, mangroves operate as vital carbon sinks, defend shorelines against erosion, and offer habitats for various marine species including fish and birds. Through this tree-planting initiative, Dubai intends to improve its green spaces while protecting marine environments and enhancing food security.
This initiative is part of the UAE’s larger environmental objectives, which encompass the national plan to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030 and support the country’s Net Zero by 2050 goals. The Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary, spanning 75.2 square kilometers, will see an enhancement of its diverse ecosystem, featuring coral reefs, seagrass meadows, and existing mangrove forests.
Mangroves not only sequester substantial carbon but act as natural barriers, mitigating wave impacts and stabilizing sediments. Their root systems provide rich habitats for marine life, benefiting fisheries and local communities, striking a harmonious balance between ecological preservation and sustainable growth.
The launch of this initiative coincided with the UAE’s Planting Week, showcasing Dubai’s ongoing dedication to environmental care. By merging cutting-edge development with ecological stewardship, the emirate continues to exemplify nature-based climate solutions in the region.
