Johor State Election: 305 Campaign Offences Noted by EC

Johor State Election: 305 Campaign Offences Noted by EC

Post by : Shakul

As of July 2, Malaysia's Election Commission (EC) has documented 305 cases relating to election campaign violations during the current campaign period for the 16th Johor State Election. The commission has emphasized its commitment to enforcing compliance, deploying teams to oversee candidate activities across Johor.

Every complaint is thoroughly investigated, leading to actions taken by the Election Campaign Enforcement Teams (PP-KPR).

Prevalence of Illegal Posters Among Offences

The highest number of reported violations stem from campaign materials displayed in non-permitted areas. Specifically, 140 cases involved illegal posters and banners located in restricted zones established by local officials.

Additionally, 90 instances involved campaign materials obstructing visibility for motorists, while 27 concerns were raised about advertisements positioned within the 50-metre radius of polling stations. The balance of 48 reports covered other election infractions.

Heightened Monitoring by Enforcement Teams

To facilitate a structured election process, the EC has activated 56 Election Campaign Enforcement Teams since the nomination day on June 27, and these teams will continue their oversight until the campaigning ends on July 10.

Collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) forms a crucial part of monitoring campaign operations and ensuring adherence to election rules.

Identifying Campaign Offence Causes

The EC has noted these offences primarily due to the illegal display of campaign materials in restricted public locations. Many incidents involve posters in prohibited zones or materials obstructing traffic visibility, with strict guidelines designed to promote public safety and fair competition among candidates.

Response to Violations

Each reported offence is under assessment, with the enforcement teams pursuing necessary actions. Coordination with law enforcement and regulatory bodies aims to eliminate illegal campaign items, probe complaints, and ensure adherence to the Election Offences Act throughout the campaign duration.

Voting Dates for Johor Residents

Early voting is set for July 7, with the general polling day for the public on July 11. A total of 172 candidates are vying for 56 state assembly seats in this election.

EC Advocates Responsible Campaigning

The Election Commission has urged all contesting parties, candidates, and campaign personnel to adhere to election regulations and ethical guidelines throughout the Johor polls. Compliance is key to fostering public trust in Malaysia’s democratic framework.

The EC reinforces its determination to conduct transparent, equitable, and competent elections from the campaigning phase through to the voting day.

The Johor State Election is closely observed, with increased emphasis on lawful campaigning and maintaining electoral integrity. The EC has enhanced enforcement by deploying specialized monitoring units and strengthening cooperation with various governmental bodies to address infringements swiftly.

As the campaign progresses, authorities encourage active civic engagement while ensuring all candidates have fair chances. Robust enforcement of campaign standards is vital for sustaining voter confidence and upholding a transparent electoral process as polling day approaches.

Final Stage of the Johor Election Campaign

As the campaign enters its concluding week, the EC asserts that monitoring will persist until the campaign period officially concludes at 11:59 p.m. on July 10. Authorities are committed to maintaining vigilance over campaign practices to secure a peaceful election.

Voters are urged to stay informed through official channels, and all involved are asked to contribute to a smooth electoral process.
